The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC)—lead by DNC Deputy Chairman, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ)—endorsed Jimmy Gomez in the race for the 34th Congressional District, the seat previously held by Xavier Becerra.
California Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) said:
“Jimmy Gomez has been a staunch progressive leader in California. We need his clear vision of a more just, equitable society here in Congress. I am proud to endorse him and I’m eager to have him join us in the Progressive Caucus.”
CPC Chairman, Congressman Raúl Grijalva (AZ-3), who had endorsed Jimmy Gomez before the April 4th Special Election, said:
“Jimmy has proven himself to be a fearless state legislator who has helped countless Californians. I’m convinced that he will be a strong partner in fighting for our values. We need Jimmy in Congress, and I enthusiastically support his candidacy.”
The CPC boasts a membership of 75 Democrats, making it the largest caucus in the House Democratic Caucus. Prior to leaving Congress to become California’s Attorney General, Xavier Becerra was a member. CPC members promote a strong, progressive agenda, referred to as “The Progressive Promise–Fairness for All.”
Jimmy Gomez is one of the most effective and progressive members of the California State Legislature. As an Assemblymember he passed laws expanding paid family leave, promoting environmental justice, preventing domestic violence, protecting Planned Parenthood, and stopping President Trump’s anti-immigrant orders.
First elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016 with over 86% of the vote, Gomez’s Assembly district encompasses more than half the 34th Congressional District. On April 4th, Jimmy Gomez placed first in the 23-way special election, earning 25% of the vote. Jimmy lives in Eagle Rock with his wife Mary, and dog Austin.
